Finistauri The Watchmakers Drag Drivers along with the faithful "Pit Crew" who always seem to be on strike or throwing wrenches around š¤Æ All The Drag Monsters ready to make the road trip to "Knoxville Tennessee" To Dave's "DragWay" For The Smoky Mountain Fall Nationals. š¤ Glad the fuel coast are only $1.88 š¤ I can see them Doubling in the next 4 years. Good Luck to All my Drag Mates, Got my eyeš§ on a few of you, that have been creating some beleave it or not highly improved Supercars, Can be totally enjoyed at Dave's Track š¤«š¤ but there is that "WALL" And then the "FILING CABINAT". Bet if I moved that catch box I'd find holes all the way throw and find some of Daves Oldest Dinosaur Drag Monster still driven halfway into His Filing cabinet, I beleave the Filing cabinet is only there to protect the Rocket Drag Monster's from braking throw and destroying the Professional Pool Table š± Looking forward to those new ET's. Also a "Great" Thanks to JJ Wallce in North Texas For His Event At His BEAR CREEK DRAGWAY. He was a Great Encouragment to me in building and Racing with my Drag Friends.

I started on my unlimited Inline today for the upcoming race at Daveās. My first unlimited Inline. I have a question on the pinion gear. I have a brass and steel wizard. I was going to start by using the brass pinion. I thought it would be a tight press on fit, but itās a easy slip on. Should I use loctite or solder it on ? If loctite which is best ? Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks Rick

I like to solder, I frist put pinion on the shaft, Line it up with the axle and crown gear, Put a clamp behind the pinion or mark it after lining it up, Then flex the end of armature shaft Put pinion on, Heat up letting solder flow only from the end of pinion, the flex Sucks it down in. Not to much soilder then you have to clean out the gears.

Rick/hairycanary What Armature and chassis did you find to build your Supercar-?

Thanks for the tip on soldering. I went with a viper chassis and a HC 1.0 arm. Iām going to start with Polly motor mags and then some lower strength Neos. See what the difference is. Iām going to start with a 8/20 gear with a .470 tire and maybe try a .500 tire ? No braids at first. I may be way off on what Iām doing but I donāt Know any betterš Thanks again Rick

go with the steel pinion. the crown will eat the brass pinion in the shut down. I like Mike's soldering explanation ..... I would add (or specify) lightly tin the armature shaft (I like silver bearing solder for this), being sure you roughed it up a bit. .... I like acid flux for this application. using a soldering iron with a flat angled tip, rest the pinion on the flat edge, when it begins to smoke push the armature shaft into the pinion gear hole, then adjust for depth. be sure to flux the shaft BEFORE inserting it into HOT pinion. use a good spray cleaner, like RC engine cleaner, to remove the flux residue. no matter which pinion your choose to solder on, this will pretty much insure a tight bond.

Thank You Al ! Thatās all good information. I appreciate it. I chickened out yesterday on putting a brass or steel pinion on. I put a plastic pinion and crown in and tested with poly motor magnets. Made about 20 passes until they went away. Runs averaged between .340 - .370 best MPH was 40. Iām a ways off where it should be. Hopefully stronger motor mags and some braids will wake it up ? Before I put stronger motor magnets in I will put the steel and brass gears in it. Hopefully this week. Rick

If not soldered is the install of metal pinion, you want to use Loctite thread locker 271.

Rick, yes braids definitely and a shunt to the piece that holds the pickup shoe down as well as contacts the "endbell" in which the motor brushes reside. Sam had a way of running the shunt to the brush or "finger" the brush sits on, but I haven't attempted that yet. that info is in one of his tutorial threads way back. also, yes .... neo motor magnets are what you want for this class. strength of traction magnets varies by application and opinion. strongly recommend wheelie bars ... permanently and securely attached to the back of the chassis. hoping Dave will also post up here, he has good experience building these.

I did not chime in here sooner because I have been away this past weekend for a pool tournament in Alabama. I did not do well but my son won it. Like Al, I also recommend Neo motor magnets for this class and it is the only class that can use them without killing the performance of the chassis. You can run wheelie bars if you like and it is probably a good idea but in most cases with the BSRT or Viper chassis I have not found them necessary as those magnets do not allow the front end to come up. Only had one car in the Unlimited class ever jump out of the track and that was Steve's at the Spring Nationals. I would also recommend braids although once again I have had good luck running just some gold or silver pickups with double springs. I do not run shunts on these chassis but it does make electrical sense to run them. As far as pinion install I use Loctite gel and have not had one come loose yet but there is always a first time. Also silifoam tires are a must as no other tire stays on the rim at these speeds. I have had some plastic crown gears hold up for awhile but not the pinions. Nice to see more interest in this class as the cars are rocket fast and tough to keep running but it is fun.
