I'm looking at making a couple molds to make a couple of pro mod bodies to try and run in the upcoming doorslammer races and I'm wondering what kind of prep you do to the cars you use to make the molds? I didn't do much my first attempt a few years ago and am wondering if the result would be any different? Thanks.

Hey Eddieb, I've only done afew moulds. The first three showef me differences between new, old, and older bodies. The three all being die-cast yielded different results because of condition due mainly to age and handling over time.
The newest of the three came right out of the box. And had some paint missing(chipped) in one corner. Some putty and sanding, and castings from this mold were clean. But the only reason I even looked at this body so closely(magnifying glass), was the condition of the other castings from the first two moulds.
The first mould was from a relatively new body. Though it looked clean, after casting a body from this mould looked like it had its skin peeled of in spots. Seems clear or gloss coatings will come off of die-casts without affecting paint underneath. If not detected beforehand and remedied. Castings will reflect this problem. This body also had minor dings thatt became evident after casting.
The oldest of the three bodies the one that had been kicked around for some time yielded the poorest castings. Showing alot of dings and pitting all over body.
These defects in castings can be remedied, but a nice clean body right out of the mould is nice thing to see. Not to mention very satisfying.
Be looking for your bodies at the races, good luck with your castings............PC

Sorry to be late on this... Your castings will be no better than your master. Silicone copies everything such as chips, deco print, body casting lines, even fingerprints. Most of the time I strip the diecast, clean up any mold lines/defects, then repaint the body for a nice finish, then cast...RM
