Have been speaking about windings via PM's. Just looked through pages of tips and could not find anything. Think a thread is needed if possible changes come next season reguarding timing of arms in NTRA rules. Don't think I'm at liberty to speak of other possible.changes that might have others intrested in doing windings , at this time.
I'm far from an expert.at this. Hope others will pass along any info they can.
If MM/PS allow advances, the only arm I know of sold with advanced timming in the right ohm range is a Slottech arm. Timing can be advanced by turning comm. However sometimes wires are to tight to do this without taking a wind from each stack. Or to be able to reach desired degree of advsnce without same unwinding.
Found some notes recently, thought they might help. Not sure if they were copied or from where. In regards to 36g wire (think 3ish ohm arms are 36g or close), this is what I had written ;
36g - 90, 95, 100, 120 turns 100 to 115 mid range
36dbl/50. 20° HOT. POLY POLY
This is how they were written, second sounds like me but don't know or remember......
Just did a couple of rewinds on Tyco arms. Used wire that measured .0055 (think wire gauge encompasses a range of wire). Went about 15° past stock on timing. 95 turns per pole. Ohm'd at 2.2 ea. Thinner wire, more turns maybe or if you can get 120 turns on might get high 2's ?
Hope anybody that knows anything might chime in. Sure would like a source for blanks. ....... Peter

Hey Dave, didn't want to get to far off subject in TM thread.
Sometimes 2 arms that spec the same may perform differently from one another............ this may be because of differences in windings, wraps, or turns of wire. A wire wound across others instead of parallel to the prior wrap can cause what I've seen referred to as "Techni-jargen". Best I can explain would be a glitch in the wave if looking at scope. This could result in a change of timing or loading of each pole. Any slight difference in comm plates will also have an influence on performance.

New season....... don't know if advances are allowed. I don't care right now. And too happy to look at rules. Got two brand new spools of shiny pretty red magnet wire. Ahhhh ha ha.......... I'm so happy I could sh.......smile :-) been smiling for two days...:-)....:-) Have to finish up one body and builds will be covered til May. Tying Vise is out and magnifier polished.

Just finished up last body project for X car........ gotta run out but when I get back its setup time for winding !
Dave, did you use same mags for 32 & 34g arms ? Also how high in levels did you go with polys, or did you go right to neo mags ? I've been told polys can be had that are just as strong neo's. But not sure what or which they may be.
NOTE - as mentioned in other thresd, intrest may seem to lack at times. But may well stem from having to focus on upcoming race. Full schedulde makes it hard at times to think of anything but what is next. Every new class I've seen introduced to the NTRA picks up as time goes on.

Peter please post some pics and how to on here of the winding process in very interested in trying to learn how to do this.

Peter please post some pics and how to on here of the winding process in very interested in trying to learn how to do this. Lol........... oh, Lewis. Thats funny , I'm interested in learning also. Probably why I keep going back to it. For some reason, those that do rewinding are very closed mouth about it. Or, maybe it's just very few that do it. Don't know, combination of both maybe. I would recommend to anybody doing this to do a pancake first before an inline. Principles are the same, but pancakes are done without comm in the way of winding. And are much easier to see work in progress. One that I had fun doing is on a pancake. If you have a stock arm & soldering equipped your ready to go. Unwind the arm carefully onto pencil or empty thread spool. Anything so it DOES NOT KINK ! Then wrap it back onto arm. Two wires at a time. Half the amoumt of turns (vs stock). Stock 14.5 ohm became 4 ohm. When you get ready to start I can give you my ideas or tell you how I do things. But keep in mind there are those that know far more than me on this subject. ......... I'm gonna try it in the next few days on a Tyco arm that the only spares I have its a 3.5 ohm no now I will see what I can mess up lol

Hey all, Im just getting back to trying some Tjet rewinds myself, I havent done any in about 45 years, so its been awhile.... I can try later to post a pic of my home made rewinding tool if anyone is interested. I have been working with 9' of #36 wire, but Im having trouble getting the laquer/enamel/poly crap off of the wire... suggestions please!? Thanks

Real intrested in what your calling a winding tool. I use a fly tying vise. Look to be in function the same as vise you made. Started using a bobbin for tying flies also. Works as dispenser for wire.
Just got a spool of 36g wire....... curious what 9' is yielding in terms of ohms on pancake.
Had problems once with coating....... don't remember what is was. Remember using x-acto once to scrap coating. Unwound a turn , laid flat on glass , used backside of edge. Best as I can remember.

Peter, its all home made. From scrap steel. I work in maintenance, built this one on my break time about 12 years ago... I use the fly tying bobbins as well.
I lay out the wire and cut to length, then wind it onto an empty spool of thread. I tape it down with masking tape. I do this 3 times, then thread the bobbin and wind each pole one at a time. I have a lot of fly tying background, so that part is second nature for me. I built the winder with a crank, its sort of like having a rotary fly vise.
I hope to get back to the motor soon, I need to strip the wires and solder it all up. This is the third attempt, each one gets a little neater than the previous. The first one ran, the second one smoked... hoping this one will run. I want to make some arms in the 2.4-5.0 ranges, just starting out.
I need to get some dead arms with good plates, that isnt as easy as I thought it would be. Most of my burned out arms have comm plates that are toasted.
Im hoping that someone here posts more info, maybe their winding info and suggestions. Anyone!?

So old guys.... Does anyone else still have this book? Details on rewinding in here, I did it back in the day when I was like 12. I fried a Tjet transformer with a double wind. Got hotter than heck, then..... tick........... tick............. tick...... the thing just died! That was the last one I did. But it did run, for a moment or two... lol

Never saw this. Does it give any specs on winds. Look back in.thread couple of things you said are mentioned. Don't remember what they were. Day dreaming about the way Auto World was.

Finding good comm plates isn't easy........ last pancake I did was on best I could find for plate. Mentioned earlier today an arm that came out at 4.0 ea pole. Dbl wind with stock wire. Did one out of curiosity some months ago. Started at 14.5 or so. Destroys Mean Greens with similar mags.
Just got spools of 34 & 36g wire. I'll post results of any winds I do. Never had a reference chart or guide. Just some notes I somehow managed to save from god only knows when or what they came from. Could be from your book.......lol. No, I'd remember that book.
